SMART, which stands for Self Management And Recovery Training, is a nonprofit organization established in 1994 with a mission to provide free, self-empowering, mutual-help groups for overcoming substance or activity addiction. Unlike traditional recovery groups, SMART employs science-based techniques, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), to assist individuals in their recovery journey. The program focuses on the present and future rather than dwelling on the past, avoiding labels that might negatively impact self-image. SMART continually updates its programs based on emerging research and collaborates with professionals and researchers in the addiction field to ensure the most effective methods are employed. While the overall effectiveness of SMART Recovery as a whole has limited research, the individual tools and methods have solid evidence supporting their efficacy, and mutual-help groups are recognized to play a crucial role in the recovery process.
